Israel Computer Sciences Olympiad Team

The International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) is an annual competition for teenagers focusing on a variety of topics from the world of computer sciences. The competition requires the ability to solve problems of an algorithmic nature and implement the solution using programming tools. Team members must demonstrate a high level of understanding of computer sciences and competitive programming, and succeed in tackling challenging algorithmic problems, with emphasis on problem analysis and the development of creative solutions that include a sophisticated algorithmic core, incorporating graphs, string matching, the use of complex data structures, and more. The first International Olympiad in Informatics was held in Bulgaria in 1989 with delegations from 13 countries participating. Today, nearly 90 countries participate in the Olympiad each year. Israel joined in 1996.

דגשים חשובים:

המבחן הינו כלל ארצי, ומיועד לכלל תלמידות ותלמידי ישראל מכיתות ט'-י"א (ללא תלות במקצוע הגברה/מגמה בבית הספר).
שלב א' יתקיים בשני מועדים, וניתן להשתתף במועד אחד או בשני המועדים, כאשר התוצאה הגבוהה מבניהם תחשב.
המבחן הינו מבחן מקוון, וניתן להיבחן מבית הספר או מהבית, בשפות עברית או ערבית. משך המבחן הינו 90 דקות.
הכניסה למבחן היא דרך אתר משרד החינוך, באמצעות סיסמת "הזדהות אחידה" אישית. אין צורך להרשם למבחן מראש.
חומרי הכנה למבחן ניתן למצוא באתר הנבחרת ובאתר משרד החינוך. יודגש כי המבחן אינו דורש ידע תכנותי קודם, ומיועד לזהות יכולת חשיבה אלגוריתמית בסיסית.

שלב ב' במיונים לנבחרת מדעני המחשב יתקיים ב-23.4.2026.
דגשים חשובים:

למבחן יוזמנו תלמידות ותלמידים אשר עברו בהצלחה את שלב א'.
המבחן יערך במספר מוקדים ברחבי הארץ.
שלב זה הוא מבחן הבודק יכולת פתרון בעיות וחשיבה אלגוריתמית / מתמטית. הוא כולל שאלות פתוחות שבהן יש לפתח אלגוריתם ולכתוב אותו בפסאודו-קוד. שלב זה אינו דורש ידע תכנותי.

דגשים חשובים:

למבחן יוזמנו תלמידות ותלמידים אשר עברו בהצלחה את שלב ב'.
המבחן יתקיים באופן פיזי, באוניברסיטת בר-אילן.
טרם שלב ג' יתקיימו מספר מפגשי הכנה מקוונים למבחן. מפגשים אלו יועברו על ידי צוות האימון של הנבחרת, ומטרתם לסייע בהיערכות המיטבית ביותר למבחן. המפגשים הינם רשות ולא חובה.
שלב זה מורכב מבעיות אתגר אלגוריתמיות, בסגנון אולימפי, המצריכות ידע תכנותי בסיסי. המבחן יכלול פיתוח אלגוריתם לבעיות מאתגרות, תכנות האלגוריתם במערכת בדיקות ומתן הסבר בכתב לאלגוריתם. הדגש בשלב זה הוא על יכולת פתרון בעיות וחשיבה יצירתית, תוך הדגמת יכולת פירמול הפתרון האבסטרקטי לתוכנית מחשב.
כל המידע הנוסף בנוגע למבחן, לרבות חומרי ההכנה, ימסרו לתלמידות ולתלמידים באמצעות צוות הנבחרת באוניברסיטת בר-אילן.

שלבי המיון:

כ-50 תלמידות ותלמידים אשר יעברו את כלל שלבי המיון יתקבלו לנבחרת ישראל במדעי המחשב. במסגרת הפעילות תתבצע הכשרה מקצועית הן בפן התאורטי והן בפן המעשי, והמצטיינים והמצטיינות מקרב חברות וחברי הנבחרת ישתתפו בתחרויות בינלאומיות במדעי המחשב. אימוני הנבחרת כוללים אימונים חד יומיים (אימון שבועי בקמפוס האוניברסיטה או באופן מקוון), מחנות אימונים הכוללים לינה, הרצאות, תרגולים אישיים וקבוצתיים, משימות למידה והשתתפות בתחרויות פנימיות ועולמיות מגוונות. הנבחרת מדגישה בפעילות גם את הנדבך החברתי ועורכת פעילויות גיבוש לאורך השנה.

הפעילות:

במסגרת פעילות הכנת הנבחרת לתחרות ברמה הבינלאומית הגבוהה ביותר, חברות וחברי הנבחרת ניגשים לתחרויות מקדימות ותחרויות אימון - תחרויות בינלאומיות בהשתתפות מדינות רבות. השתתפות בתחרויות אלו מאפשרת לתלמידות ולתלמידי הנבחרת לבחון את הידע והיכולות שלהם בהשוואה לחבריהם ממדינות אחרות, לתרגל היבחנות בתנאי תחרות ולחוש את האווירה הייחודית לתחרות בינלאומית במדעי המחשב.

Objectives:

Promoting Israel’s achievements and the personal achievements of participants representing Israel in the International Olympiad in Informatics.
Bringing together the best young talents in the field for high-level scientific activity and a meaningful social experience.
Developing problem analysis and solution-finding skills, creativity, out-of-the-box thinking in computer sciences, and the ability to create efficient solutions for complex problems.
Promoting the field of computer science among teenagers, and encouraging excellence in computer sciences and choosing this field as a meaningful future pursuit.

Stage A
Stage A of the tryouts for the Computer Science Olympiad team for the 2026-2027 school year will take place on two dates:
First date: 5.2.2026 | 18 Shevat 5786 | Between 9:00-14:00

Important highlights:

The exam is nationwide and intended for all students in Israel in grades 9-11 (regardless of their school major/track).
Stage A takes place on two dates. Students can participate in one or both dates; the higher score of the two will be considered.
This is an online exam which can be taken from school or from home, in Hebrew or Arabic.
The exam lasts 90 minutes.
Access to the exam is through the Ministry of Education website, using a personal Unified Login password.
There is no need to register for the exam in advance.
Preparation materials for the exam can be found on the team's website and the Ministry of Education's website.
It should be emphasized that the exam does not require prior programming knowledge and is intended to identify basic algorithmic thinking ability.

Stage B

Stage B of the tryouts for the Computer Science Olympiad team will take place on 23.4.2026.

Important highlights:

Students who successfully passed Stage A will be invited to the exam.

The exam will be held at several locations across the country.

This stage is an exam that tests problem-solving ability and algorithmic/mathematical thinking. It includes open-ended questions in which an algorithm must be developed and written in pseudo-code.

This stage does not require programming knowledge.

Stage C

Important highlights:

Students who successfully passed Stage B will be invited to the exam. The exam will take place physically at Bar-Ilan University.
Before Stage C, several online preparation sessions for the exam will be held. These sessions, conducted by the team's coaching staff, aim to assist in the best possible preparation for the exam. Sessions are optional, not mandatory.
This stage consists of Olympic-style algorithmic challenges which require basic programming knowledge.
The exam includes developing an algorithm for challenging problems, programming the algorithm in a testing system, and providing a written explanation for the algorithm.
The emphasis at this stage is on problem-solving ability and creative thinking while demonstrating the ability to formalize the abstract solution into a computer program.
All additional information regarding the exam, including preparation materials, will be provided to the students by the team staff at Bar-Ilan University.

Activity:

About 50 students who pass all stages of the selection process will be accepted into the Israel National Computer Sciences Team. The program provides professional theoretical and practical training. Outstanding team members will participate in international computer science competitions. Team training includes one-day sessions (weekly training on the university campus or online), training camps that include overnight stays, lectures, individual and group exercises, learning assignments, and participation in various internal and global competitions. The team also emphasizes the social aspect of its activities and holds team-building events throughout the year.

Preliminary competitions and additional competitions:

As part of the team's preparation for the highest level of international competition, team members participate in preliminary and training competitions. These are international contests featuring many countries. Participation in these competitions allows team members to compare their knowledge and abilities compared to that of their peers from other countries, practice taking exams under competition conditions, and experience the unique atmosphere of an international computer science competition.
