Israel Biology Olympiad Team

The International Biology Olympiad (IBO) is an annual competition for teenagers focusing on diverse topics in the world of biology. The best young biologists from all over the world meet for a competition where they tackle biological problems and conduct biological experiments. Contestants are required to demonstrate ingenuity, creativity, and perseverance. In addition, the multicultural meeting fosters friendships between the future scientists from all over the world. The competition began as a contest between Czechoslovakia and Poland between 1985-1989. In 1990, the first International Biology Olympiad was held with the participation of 6 countries. Currently some 75 countries participate in the competition. Israel joined in 2022. The Israeli National Biology Olympiad (IsNBO) is held annually at Tel Aviv University. Top performers in this competition make up Israel’s official delegation for the international competition.

במסגרת הפעילות יתקיימו מחנות אימון (הכוללים לינה), ימי עיון מרוכזים ומפגשים ווירטואליים. התלמידות והתלמידים הפעילים באולימפיאדה ידרשו לעמוד בלמידה אינטנסיבית, העמקה בחומרי למידה אקדמיים, הגשת מטלות והיבחנות תדירה. הנבחרת מדגישה בפעילות גם את הנדבך החברתי ועורכת פעילויות גיבוש לאורך השנה.

דגשים חשובים:

המבחן הינו כלל ארצי, ומיועד לכלל תלמידות ותלמידי ישראל מכיתות ט'-י"א (ללא תלות במקצוע הגברה/מגמה בבית הספר).
שלב א' יתקיים בשני מועדים, וניתן להשתתף במועד אחד או בשני המועדים, כאשר התוצאה הגבוהה מבניהם תחשב.
משך המבחן הינו 90 דקות, והוא יכלול כ-25 שאלות רבות-ברירה בדרגות קושי שונות.
הכניסה למבחן היא דרך אתר משרד החינוך, באמצעות סיסמת "הזדהות אחידה" אישית. אין צורך להרשם למבחן מראש.
המבחן הינו מבחן מקוון, וניתן להיבחן מבית הספר או מהבית, בשפות עברית או ערבית.
חומרי הכנה למבחן ניתן למצוא באתר הנבחרת ובאתר משרד החינוך.

שלב זה הינו שלב המיון הסופי לקראת השתתפות באליפות ישראל בביולוגיה (IsNBO).
המבחן יתקיים באופן פיזי, באוניברסיטת תל- אביב
חלק מהשאלות יתבססו על חומרי הכנה שישלחו מבעוד מועד לתלמידות ולתלמידים שיעברו את שלבי המיון.

תהליך המיון:

האולימפיאדה הלאומית לביולוגיה (Israel National Biology Olympiad) IsNBO
כ-50 תלמידים/ות העוברים/ות את שלב ג' יתקבלו לאולימפיאדה הלאומית לביולוגיה IsNBO, במסגרת הפעילות התלמידות והתלמידים יוכשרו תאורטית ומעשית לקראת התחרות הלאומית. האימונים כוללים מחנות אימונים חד יומיים, מחנות אימונים רבי ימים הכוללים לינה, תרגולים אישיים וקבוצתיים ומשימות שבועיות ותחרויות פנימיות. המצטיינים/ות באולימפיאדה הלאומית יבחרו לאולימפיאדה הבינלאומית בביולוגיה.

Activity:

As part of the activity, training camps (including overnight stays), intensive seminars, and virtual meetings are held. Students participating in the Olympiad are required to engage in intensive learning, delve into academic study materials, submit assignments, and take frequent exams. The team also emphasizes the activity’s social aspect and conducts team-building events throughout the year.

Important Highlights:

The exam is nationwide and intended for all students in Israel in grades 9-11 (regardless of their major/subject of study at school).
Stage A will take place on two dates. Students can participate in one or both dates, with the higher score of the two being counted.
The exam lasts 90 minutes, and will include some 25 multiple-choice questions of varying difficulty.
Access to the exam is through the Ministry of Education website, using a personal Unified Login password. There is no need to register for the exam in advance.
This is an online exam which can be taken from school or from home, in Hebrew or Arabic.
Preparation materials for the exam can be found on the team's website and the Ministry of Education's website.

Stage B
Stage B of the Biology Team selection will take place on 25.5.2026 at several locations across the country.

The exam will be held at several locations across the country
The exam will include multiple-choice questions, with some questions based on preparation materials sent in advance directly to the students by the Olympiad team at Tel Aviv University

Important Highlights:

This stage is the final selection stage for participation in the Israel Biology Olympiad (IsNBO).
The exam will take place physically at Tel Aviv University
Some of the questions will be based on preparation materials that will be sent in advance to the students who pass the selection stages.

The Olympics:

The Israel National Biology Olympiad (IsNBO)
About 50 students who pass stage C will be accepted into the Israel National Biology Olympiad (IsNBO). As part of the activity, the students will be provided with theoretical and practical training for the national competition. Training includes one-day training camps, multi-day training camps that include overnight stays, individual and group exercises, weekly assignments, and internal competitions. Outstanding students in the national Olympiad will be selected for the International Biology Olympiad.
